Reticulated Hillstream Loach / Tiger Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata)

The Reticulated Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata), also commonly known as the Tiger Hillstream Loach, is a fascinating freshwater fish prized for its intricate tiger-like patterns, flattened body, and exceptional algae-grazing abilities. Native to the fast-flowing streams of Vietnam, this unique bottom-dwelling species is especially popular among aquarists looking for an unusual and hardworking addition to their planted aquariums.

🐯 Stunning Tiger-Like Patterning

Reticulated Hillstream Loaches feature a distinctive golden-yellow to tan body covered in intricate dark brown to black maze-like stripes and reticulated markings. Their broad, flattened bodies and wing-like pectoral and pelvic fins give them a unique appearance resembling a miniature freshwater stingray.

Each loach displays its own individual pattern, with some exhibiting bold tiger-like stripes while others feature finer, interconnected markings. Their specialized fins allow them to cling tightly to rocks, driftwood, and aquarium glass, even in strong currents.

Appearance & Traits

  • 🐯 Golden-yellow to tan body with intricate black tiger-like patterns
  • 🖤 Unique reticulated markings across the body and fins
  • 🐟 Small adult size of approximately 2–3 inches
  • 🌊 Specialized flattened body adapted to fast-flowing streams
  • 🌿 Excellent grazer of soft algae, biofilm, and microorganisms
  • 💚 Peaceful temperament with entertaining bottom-dwelling behavior
  • 🪨 Strong suction-like grip for clinging to rocks, glass, and other smooth surfaces

Packaging & Sexual Dimorphism

All Reticulated Hillstream Loaches are unsexed unless otherwise specified. Mature males typically develop a more squared-off head and broader pectoral region, while females generally have a rounder body shape when viewed from above.

Sexual differences may be difficult to distinguish in juvenile or smaller specimens. Individual fish may vary naturally in size, coloration, and pattern intensity.

Care & Tank Setup

Minimum tank size: 20 gallons, preferably a 20-gallon long aquarium or larger
Filtration: Strong, well-oxygenated filtration with moderate to high water flow is recommended

  • Temperature: 68–76°F (20–24°C)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • GH: 3–12 dGH
  • KH: 1–6 dKH
  • TDS: approximately 100–250 ppm

Reticulated Hillstream Loaches thrive in mature, well-oxygenated aquariums with plenty of smooth rocks, driftwood, and established surfaces for grazing. Their natural habitat consists of shallow, fast-flowing streams with rocky substrates and high dissolved oxygen levels.

We recommend providing moderate to strong water circulation, excellent filtration, and plenty of oxygen to replicate their natural environment. Smooth river stones, rounded pebbles, and driftwood provide ideal grazing surfaces where beneficial biofilm and algae can develop.

Although generally peaceful, Hillstream Loaches may display mild territorial behavior toward other bottom-dwelling fish, particularly when competing for preferred grazing spots. They can be kept individually or in groups of 3–5 or more when sufficient space, food, and hiding areas are available.

They make excellent community fish when housed with other peaceful species that appreciate similar water conditions. Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive fish or species that require consistently high tropical temperatures.

🌿 Natural Algae Grazing & Tank Cleaning

Reticulated Hillstream Loaches are well known for their natural grazing behavior, spending much of their time moving across aquarium glass, rocks, and driftwood in search of soft algae, biofilm, and microscopic organisms.

Their specialized mouthparts allow them to scrape food from hard surfaces, making them a fascinating addition to established aquariums.

While they can help manage certain types of soft algae, Hillstream Loaches should not be relied upon as the sole solution for algae control. They require a balanced diet and an established aquarium with sufficient natural grazing opportunities.

Diet

Reticulated Hillstream Loaches are primarily biofilm grazers and omnivorous micropredators. In the wild, they feed on algae-associated microorganisms, small invertebrates, and organic material found on submerged surfaces.

Offer a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and small frozen or live foods. Bloodworms, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized foods can provide additional protein and nutritional variety.

Supplement their diet with naturally grown biofilm and soft algae on aquarium rocks and decorations. Blanched zucchini or spinach may also be offered occasionally if accepted.

Feed small portions daily and ensure food reaches the bottom of the aquarium. Because these fish naturally graze throughout the day, mature aquariums with established biofilm are strongly recommended.

Lifespan & Breeding

With proper care, Reticulated Hillstream Loaches can live approximately 5–8 years, with longevity depending on water quality, nutrition, and overall aquarium conditions.

Breeding in captivity is possible but generally requires a mature aquarium with clean, oxygen-rich water, suitable rocky substrates, and stable environmental conditions.

These fish are egg scatterers, and breeding behavior may involve males displaying territorial or courtship activity. Eggs can settle into spaces between gravel or rocks, where developing fry may find shelter from adult fish.

Successfully raising fry can be challenging, as newly hatched juveniles require access to microscopic foods and established biofilm.

⚠️ Note

Always ensure your aquarium is fully cycled and test your water parameters before introducing new fish. Reticulated Hillstream Loaches are particularly sensitive to poor water quality, low oxygen levels, and sudden environmental changes.

Slowly acclimate your Hillstream Loaches to their new aquarium and avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry. Provide adequate water circulation, oxygenation, and established grazing surfaces to help them settle into their new environment.

Unlike many tropical community fish, Hillstream Loaches generally prefer cooler, highly oxygenated water and should not be maintained in excessively warm aquariums for extended periods.

Individual fish may vary naturally in size, coloration, pattern, and body shape based on age, sex, genetics, and environmental conditions.
